Our View on Luan!
Adding trim or molding to a space is a simple yet effective way to offer more visual interest and an extra touch of pizzazz to any room!
However, depending on the amount of trim needed, costs can quickly add up. We at Trust the Vision Decor have found a simple way around this problem. Our solution is LUAN. Pronounced lu-wan. Luan is a very thin and flexible plywood (yes, it is real wood) that is typically used as an underlayment for floors. But in our infinite quest to recycle, reuse, and repurpose, we have found that luan makes absolutely stunning trim and we’ll show you how!
First let’s address cost. Let’s take a very average priced piece of general purpose trim costing about $.80 per linear foot. If you were to purchase 1 full piece at 16 ft. that would cost you about $13. If you purchase one sheet of 4×8 ft. luan costing about $12, and have it cut at the store into 2” strips (this can be done at Home Depot) you now have 24 strips of luan 2 inch by 8 feet for a little less than one full piece of trim. Cost savings at its best!!!!
The greatest thing about luan is that it can be painted or stained, and its light weight and flexibility make it a very versatile material. Here are several projects where luan was used instead of trim. One tip: You can paint either side of the luan, and you may want to sand the sides depending on your cuts. If you decide stain it, we suggest staining the side that shows the more authentic looking wood grain.
Not bad, not bad at all! Thinking outside the box to provide significant savings takes vision, trust ours!
