TTVD: Our Journey of Discovery
This post will be short but from the heart. We wanted to take a minute to give you a little insight about us and how we got to where we are. We know there are thousands of design blogs out there, and we’re happy you’ve allowed us to share in your journey. We are hoping this post tells you a little more about who we are and what we stand for.
We believe that everyone has a purpose. There are things we all want to do; things we want to be…people we’re meant to become. There are dreams we want to chase, and yet it always seems that whenever we want to reach higher, fear sets in. Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of disappointment…the list goes on. At least that was the case for me.
You see, I knew before we formed the business that I wasn’t walking in my purpose. While I was teaching, we renovated our home and I fell head over heels in love with decorating, but I had 100% NO clue how to start a business and I was too scared to try. So I stayed at my current job…wishing and hoping for something better.
Fast forward a year. One day I was watching Real Estate Intervention (remember that show?) on HGTV and the resident designer, Cora Sue Anthony, one of my all time favs, was staging a home for someone getting ready to sell. The basic premise of the show was to help sellers who were having trouble, redesign and sell their homes. Sound familiar? Cora Sue and Mike Aubrey were the “original” Property Brothers: Buying & Selling.
At any rate, on this episode, the house was old and worn and the homeowner looked so defeated as her home had been on the market for over a year with no offers. Cora was brought in to do a redesign and was able to totally transform this home on a budget of next to nothing. The final product was stunningly beautiful! When the homeowner saw it, she lost it. I mean lost it, like the ugly cry. It made me cry too, and I am not a crier, but I felt for the woman because between her sobs she said that she always dreamed of a beautiful home but could never get the money to do it. Whenever she saved up, the money always ended up being swallowed by an unforeseen circumstance. She had resigned herself to not having the kind of home she wanted, but Cora changed all of that by giving this woman a house she could be proud of even if just for the short time before beginning the next chapter of her life. Sounds cheesy even writing it now, but in my heart I knew I could do what Cora did.
It made me think of my own home growing up. Nice home. Good bones, but there was never enough money to really make it beautiful. “Disposable income” went to sports teams, fixing the car, school clothes, groceries, fixing the furnace, a new roof (never the fun stuff) etc. There was always something more pressing so decorating the house took a backseat.
About eighteen months later, life placed me at an obvious crossroads in my own journey. One path would be to stay the course and keep doing what I was doing. I could find comfort in the safety and security of my job but no passion. The road less traveled would be to try and build a business doing something I truly loved AND felt like I was born to do. This was my chance, and I took it. There was no huge leap, no big celebration, just small steps everyday (with a whole lot of stumbling and tripping along the way). But I had the right people placed in my path at the right time and Trust the Vision Decor was born.
Right from the beginning, I knew that I wanted to design for the everyday personm and wanted to be with people who shared that mantra. Wendy and I even considered naming the company “Everyday Design.”
Honestly, I think any talented designer can waltz into a showroom and create an amazing space for 100K or more, and there are people out there who can spend that kind of money creating a single room. I say, have at it! I don’t begrudge those people or their designers, but they are also not who we want to serve.
They are not our clients. They are not who we design for, and we are okay with that because at my core, I believe good design can be beautiful and affordable. Our focus is to bring that core belief to fruition with every project we complete.
None of it is easy. No worthwhile endeavor ever is, but I have found my path and I am walking in my purpose, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Every day that I get to do this is a privilege and I am so humbled by all that has happened since our inception. We hope you’ll continue to grow with us and as we learn, we’ll share our knowledge with you! Thanks for letting us be a part of your journey.
Here are a few before and after shots of some of projects we’ve completed. These range from the time we started until now, and from a few hundred to a few thousand bucks. These are in no way bragging rather to show you that beauty on a small budget can be done!
