We are Partial to Pallets!
Short on money for materials? Still want to make a statement in your space? We have the answer! In a word, PALLETS! Wooden pallets are transport structures used to support various materials. They are flat usually with no bottom and can be made of wood, or plastic. Pallets are plentiful! You can find them everywhere from the grocery store, to big box hardware stores, even places like fruit stands. If you ask, you can usually get them for free. The pallets we used for the projects pictured below were actually headed for the trash!
Pallets can be used in a plethora of ways; from furniture, to shelves, and even wall art! Here, we’ll show you how to revive and create furniture using paint, stain, and pallets!
Coffee Table Creation: This coffee table is made of one piece of medium density fiberboard or mdf, one pallet, one 2×3, and paint. Total cost, under $20.00! We simply cut the mdf to match the size of the top of the pallet, did some freehand designing with a router, and painted. Next we painted the outer edges of pallet that we knew would show and screwed the mdf piece to the top. Finally, we cut the 2×3 into 6 pieces; 4 for each corner and 2 for extra support in the center. We then painted each piece, and screwed the legs to the underside of the pallet. Result? An awesome, custom coffee table! It even has storage!
Rustic Bed Renovation: This bed frame was not being used and was donated to us. Here is what it looked like when we received it.
First, we lightly sanded then painted the outside area black. Following that, we cut and stained wood from 2 pallets. Then we nailed the cut pieces into the bed frame using a nail gun (they can be rented at your local Home Depot). It must be said that we HIGHLY recommend doing a dry fit of the pallet pieces before nailing them. It will save you time and frustration! Finally, drop in your mattress and bedding and BAM! Custom bed! We used the extra pallet pieces to create a staggered wood wall!
