Mom & Dad’s Living Room & Dining Room Project is in the Books!
Well guys, we are DONE!
We finished all three spaces over the weekend and actually pulled an all nighter to get them done. It was totally worth the effort! There were tears of joy and we couldn’t be happier with the result.
A few months ago, I was talking to my mom and dad about doing some updates in their downstairs. After some convincing they agreed, and we called in a bid for flooring which ended up being ridiculously high. I told my parents that I could design and renovate all three spaces in the front portion of their downstairs for the price the contractor quoted to buy and install the floor.
They agreed to let me try! The gauntlet was thrown and we were off to the races! Here’s a bit of a refresher so you can see the three downstairs spaces we tackled in all their former glory.
The dining room before..
Here’s the living room before…
Finally here’s the untouched foyer.
One of my main missions during this project was to incorporate as many of the original and sentimental pieces as I could because to me, home means being surrounded by the people and things you love. I needed to make some decisions on what to keep, but updates would be required in order to rework them into the design. My parents were fine with us updating whatever we wanted as long as we didn’t throw their most valued pieces away. This little promise took our DIY skills to another level.
We easily did 40 to 50 DIY projects over the course of this renovation, but some of the big ones where these:
We revamped their old dated dining hutch and took it from zero to hero!
The stairs got a major overhaul.
The old dining table got a makeover.
We even went rogue and painted a chair velvet chair!
This project definitely had its ups and downs, we were thrown a major curve ball in the middle of it, and it was a TON of work!
We left our blood (literally), sweat, tears, heart, and soul in these spaces, but we learned so much and got to share so much with you and to see the look on my parents’ faces when we revealed the spaces is enough to make me do it again! Here’s how it turned out!
The new and improved dining room!
A very new looking foyer 🙂
Last but definitely not least, here’s the living room transformation!
I am so proud of this project not only because Wendy and I did 99% of it with our own two hands, but because of how much we grew as people, designers, contractors, and DIY-ers! We are living proof that a big dream with lots of perseverance delivers big results!
Love you Mom and Dad!
We’ve been going back and forth about which room is the best. Do you have a favorite? Let us know in the comments below!
PS–The total flooring bid was $8200 we came in just over $9,000. Considering there were a few add-ons and three brand spanking new spaces, complete with flooring, a new railing, and a TON new furniture, we’re proud of the result!
Create. Innovate. Decorate!
