Barn Doors on a Budget!
In our latest project, the client loved the idea of contemporary sliding barn doors. They were definitely on the “must have” list for this basement renovation. We loved the idea too and promptly started looking to purchase them. We then had to promptly pump the brakes when we saw the attached price tag! The custom doors we saw cost anywhere from $500 to $4000 per door not including the track or installation! What?!?! We knew there was a more inexpensive option and starting toiling…what if we made them ourselves? We began researching found lots of information out there. So we were off!
Both we and our client really liked the idea of having doors with some texture to add some rustic elegance to the space. We found some inspiration for our end product and now we could develop our plan.
We took a trip to the local Home Depot and asked questions about how to achieve the ridged look we wanted and eventually settled on sheathing. It’s basically used as layer of protection in the construction of structure after a framing has been completed. However, we had a different plan for the piece we purchased! Note: Home Depot sells them in 4ft x 8ft sheets for about $30.
The sheathing we chose was tongue and groove so we needed to cut the pieces to size and trim the edges. Once this was done, the doors were sanded and the base of the doors was complete! We also purchased 8– 1ft x 8ft common wood pine pieces for our trim and attached them to the sheathing with wood glue and finish nails (you will have to cut the trim pieces to match the size of your door). Just like that you could really see the doors begin to take shape.
After a little more sanding and applying some dark chocolate brown semi-gloss paint, the doors were complete and ready to be hung. Note: We also purchased 2 tracks from Home Depot at $150 each and had the contractor install them for our client! The doors were hung in about 20 minutes and our contribution saved our client thousands! Beautiful custom sliding barn doors…on a budget!
