5 Foolproof Tips that ALWAYS Work When Accessorizing
Accessorizing a room is like adding jewelry to your outfit. It’s that final pop that takes you from feeling like a 9.5 to looking like an 11!
While accessorizing is a small part of your overall design, you better believe it matters! It’s that personal touch that makes your space feel like home. Without accessories, a room won’t feel or look finished.
In a word accessorizing is all about balance.
Balance refers to the visual equilibrium of a room. Balance creates a feeling of warmth and security. It makes a room feel full without feeling cluttered. Now, what exactly ‘cluttered’ means to you comes down to personal taste but it’s also what will make your space authentic. In short, do you!
We all know that when jewelry is done well, it makes you shine. By the same token, jewelry can quickly take your tasteful and sophisticated outfit and trash it if it doesn’t work! In interior design, the same goes for your accessories!
Here’s 5 tips that always (yup, I said it!) work when accessorizing your space. Let’s get to them!
Placing runners and/or place mats under your accessories adds visual interest. It’s an easy and inexpensive technique with a big pay off!
Two: Utilize Odd Numbered Groupings
By using odd numbers of groupings you always have a center focal point which is part of creating balance. Going higher than 5 items in a single starts looking cluttered. Keep this in mind when selecting your pieces.
The pillows and table illustrate this point perfectly!
Three: Incorporate Bling!
Shiny metals like chrome, mercury glass, mirrored pieces, and colored glass all add a little bling to your space. The shine offers a change in texture and is an easy way to instantly bring a little joy to your eye! Home Goods is one of my favorite places to snag some bling, but you can find interesting and unique pieces everywhere!

Four: Incorporate Objects of Varying Heights
It’s a simple technique that most people forget. However, objects of varying heights, particularly with groupings of odd numbers contribute to a space’s balance and is something I always (there it is again!) use. If you have items that are of similar heights, stack a couple of books and set one item on top to create a differentiation in height.
Notice how the shelves are styled!
Five: Mix Patterns & Textures
Having everything the same gets you a boring finish! Mixing patterns and textures is an easy way to take your space up to the next level and the bonus is by doing it with decor like pillows, throws, and hard surface accessories, there’s very little commitment. Nothing will make you feel more brave than when you know there’s a way out! LOL! If you’re scared about mixing patterns and textures, doing it with accessories is a great place to start!
Yes, the chairs add a pop of color but aside from those, if you take away the pillows, art, and accessories, the base colors in this space are pretty neutral! We’re living large with texture and patterns in this puppy!
There you have it! Five foolproof tips you can always use when accessorizing, and the best news is you can get started right now! Happy Decorating!
